Different types of anxiety.

Anxiety comes in many forms and types. Some of the more common types of anxiety disorders are test and performance anxiety, stranger and social anxiety, trait anxiety, decision or choice anxiety and paradoxical anxiety.

Let’s investigate test anxiety. This is a type of anxiety many people have suffered from, since so many of us have gone through school systems or entrance exams for which we have felt uncertainty about the outcome.  If a student is not confident he has mastered the material, or is afraid he may have forgotten something he will need to know for the test, or thinks that maybe he has studied the wrong material or not enough he might feel uneasy or anxious about taking the test.  This can be compounded by the connection a person might feel between his own personal worth and the grades he achieves. Bad grades equals bad person. Test anxiety is similar to performance anxiety, since they are both basically evaluations of ability and can be associated with self-worth.

An interesting and less understood form of anxiety is known as paradoxical anxiety.  This type of anxiety is exhibited when methods and techniques which are usually used successfully to reduce anxiety, actually cause greater anxiety.  This can happen with techniques like relaxation or meditation and even medications used to relieve anxiety. This phenomenon is discussed in the religious literature of Buddhists which places a significant emphasis on meditation, relaxation and turning inward. The literature describes people that become more agitated rather than less during meditation, and they explain that this happens naturally and recommend that this should be “mindfully explored” so that the person can “gain insight into the nature of emotion, and more profoundly, the nature of self.”
